Every late October, I get to travel with the husband on business. This year his meetings were on Florida's Amelia Island. I'm not a beach girl thanks to sand. And yet the sound of the waves and the pretty vistas are quite the draw.
This year we received some very practical welcome gifts, including things like hats, a beach bag, beach towels and flip flops.
I signed up for a nature walk one morning, and that was pretty interesting. We were introduced to the air potato vine, which rivals kudzu as a nonnative species that quickly takes over. To deal with this fast growing flora, the nonnative air potato leaf beetle was introduced to help keep it in check. You can see below that it finds the leaves quite tasty.
In addition to the usual citrus you expect to see while in Florida
...we were also treated to sightings of the Amelia Island gopher tortoise. They dig burrows in the sand dunes and I spied at least six of them on our stroll around the resort. The one below chose to make its home in the median area of the parking lot.
One afternoon, we visited Fernandina Beach to window shop and then take a cruise up the river. It was a lovely day to do a bit of sightseeing from the water.
As we crept closer to the weekend, I noticed folks coming in for the annual Georgia v. Florida football game. The Dawgs seemed more prevalent, for sure. Our resort hosted an event for fans one evening.
